Abstract
Education for sustainable development (ESD) is a purposeful educational activity that addresses issues of global justice and sustainable development. In Kazakhstan, the implementation of this goal is focused on creating equal educational opportunities, as stated in the National Concept for the Development of Higher Education. However, there is a problem of fragmented perception of ESD, which lacks a holistic approach to the implementation of the concept of sustainability in the higher education sector. In this article, we argue that there is a need for a more holistic approach to integrating ESD into all aspects of the educational system, not just as a separate topic but as a fundamental principle in all aspects of higher education, which will ensure the development of global citizenship and systems thinking in students. A number of strategies are proposed to transform educational systems to integrate sustainability principles into higher education. Developing and implementing comprehensive strategies, such as creating a holistic ESD framework, providing financial support for initiatives, and conducting information campaigns, can significantly advance Kazakhstan towards sustainable development through education. This requires a collaborative effort and ongoing dialogue among all stakeholders, including higher education organizations, government agencies, the private sector, and the general public.
