Abstract
The article provides an overview of the main approaches of researchers on the extent to which social media influence the growth of citizen participation. Social media are seen as an arena for developing a consolidated position of government and society. The potential and prospects for online participation in Kazakhstan are analysed. The focus is on social media as a format for constructive dialogue and interaction between authorities and civil society.
